Mediqs Away have been in contact with the local emergency services to advise them of the projects whereabouts and the medical staffing on site. We have chosen to supply an emergency nurse at the Banana site who has a great deal of experience in trauma management. He is supported by Emergency physicians on 24 hour call who provide advise and interface with the rescue service.

We have been aware for some time now that remote businesses needed this type of service. We commenced providing the course this month and there has been a good response to the service.

Prior to start-up our staff  liaised with local and tertiary medical teams in Darwin including RFDS and helicopter retrieval services and were supported to acquire site specific medical knowledge.

Our backup support of emergency physicians has enabled us to provide top level, first world care to our client in a very remote area of Australia.

Our staff have diagnosed, treated and managed many and varied presentations to the clinics. They have been involved in health promotion as well as intervention to reduce the presentations to the clinics and keep the workforce in top shape to do their jobs and reduce the risk of injury and illness.

These educational presentations have been well received and have included topics such as:

• healthy feet;
• dehydration and its prevention; and 
• snake bite first aid.

This has enabled our client to continue their work rather than stop and wait for a replacement which could have taken up to 2 weeks from their previous provider and continue to meet their health and safety obligations.

On arrival our staff member had to deal with a gastro outbreak and was able to provide education and practical solutions to the problems and had it under control within days resulting in the staff being able to continue with their work.
